Kilmainhan Breeding Objectives
To enable our clients and ourselves to be more profitable by:
- Producing high performance seed stock which are able to meet most market requirements;
- Emphasizing fertility by restricting joining periods;
- Producing females with adequate frame, low maintenance and good milking ability;
- Producing cattle with moderate birth weight, high growth, muscularity
with good fat cover and carcass qualities; and
- Accurately testing and describing for growth, carcass and fertility traits.
Our cattle are raised on grass with seasonal supplemental feeding with hay. Stud and commercial animals are raised together. Depending upon the year we run about 50 cows with calves, a group of heifers and another of young bulls.
The bulls this year were weaned and put out onto the mountain to toughen them up and to improve their durability. The bulls have been fed hay and some grain to prepare them for the Field Day.
We also will be introducing our new bull, The Glen Bass F343 (GR) who will be available for inspection at the Field Day along with the yearling bulls to be offered at next years Field Day.
Kilmainhan is a performance measured herd.
